With summer just around the corner, here’s a favorite that’s sure to wow the crowd at your next potluck picnic! Bursting with flavor and endless topping possibilities, this recipe lets you mix things up with different mustard varieties and cooking methods.
Ingredients
1 lb. ground beef
1 cup chopped celery
1 cup shortening
1 pkg. onion soup mix
2 Tbsps. flour
1 ½ cups tomatoes
1 Tbsp. ketchup
1 tsp. prepared mustard (yellow, brown, or Dijon)
6 sesame seed buns, toasted and buttered
Optional Ingredients
Add your favorite burger toppings, such as cheese, lettuce, pickles, tomato slices, onions, and condiments after burgers are done.
Stovetop Instructions
In a large bowl, combine the ground beef with all ingredients, except the shortening. Mix everything thoroughly with hands to evenly distribute the ingredients. Form the mixture into 6 burger patties. Heat the shortening in a skillet over medium-high heat. Once hot, add the patties and brown them on both sides for a few minutes until they develop a nice crust. After browning, reduce the heat to low, cover the skillet, and let the patties simmer in their juices for about 10 minutes to cook through and absorb flavors. Serve on sesame seed buns. Makes 6 servings.
Grill Instructions
In a large bowl, combine the ground beef with all ingredients, omitting shortening and flour. Mix everything thoroughly with hands to evenly distribute the ingredients. Form the mixture into 6 burger patties. Preheat the grill to medium heat. Grill the patties for about 4-5 minutes per side or until cooked to desired doneness. Serve on sesame seed buns. Makes 6 servings.
