Melissa Dohme Hill, Hands Across the Bay Executive Director, is the recipient of a 2024 Nation of Neighbors℠ empowerment award and a $10,000 grant.
Melissa survived a brutal domestic violence attack in January 2012, suffering 32 stab wounds in her face, neck, arms, and hands. During her recovery, Hands Across the Bay provided assistance and gave her a platform to share her story.
“I felt called to work as an advocate for Hands Across the Bay after my abuser received life in prison in 2013,” shared Melissa. “God saved my life so I can be a voice for those hiding in silence and to educate teens on the dangers of domestic violence.”
With her unique perspective as a survivor, Melissa has been an integral part of the organization’s success. “Our impact has grown immensely over the years, and I am very proud to be part of it,” said Melissa. “We strive to reach as many families as possible and protect vulnerable members of our community.”
Hands Across the Bay fills the gap in community resources by partnering with law enforcement, nonprofits, safe shelters, and other professionals in the community who support community members in crisis. The organization provides moving assistance, furniture, clothing, hygiene items, toys, baby supplies, food, counseling, and a safe place for survivors to connect.
“Through our Donation and Empowerment Center, we provide a quick response to law enforcement who identify needs for victims of crime, abuse, or trafficking,” said Melissa. “We are helping hardworking families experiencing the downward spiral of crisis/trauma find hope, healing, kindness, and a boost of love.”
Royal Neighbors of America’s CEO and President, Zarifa Reynolds presented the Nation of Neighbors award and grant to Melissa on September 12, 2024. “Our mission is to support and empower women who are making a difference in their communities. Melissa embodies the spirit of this mission through her extraordinary work,” she said. “Through this award and grant, we aim to celebrate and amplify the impact she is making on families across the bay.”
Hands Across the Bay will use its grant to assist 40 more families within the Tampa Bay area, raise awareness about vital issues, develop more engagement, and earn support from a broader audience. “This grant will greatly expand our capacity to help families in need,” said Melissa. “With each dollar we spend, we invest in families that truly want to get back on their own feet and change their lives for the better.”
